Connecting Theory & Practice of Technical Knowledge

Image
A complete Interactive Quality Learning Program was recently conducted for diploma-level students, designed and developed to make core quality management principles easier to understand and apply. The structured module included six key components: 1. Introduction to Quality – linking core concepts with OEE 2. Pareto Analysis – prioritizing issues based on impact 80/20 3. Fishbone Diagram – exploring structured root cause analysis (6M) 4. Control Chart – tracking process stability performance over time 5. Fix and Reflect – implementing corrective actions and relation to OEE. 6. 7 QC Tools – equipping students with 7 practical quality tools use widely by industry. This module was developed to bridge theoretical clarity with hands-on application, enabling learners to connect quality practices to real-life systems in production and service domains. Quality is not just a technical concept, it's embedded in everyday decisions, experiences, and outcomes. When understood through both theo...

Teaching the Practical Cost of Quality. Beyond the Theory!

Image
In manufacturing company, every defect carries a hidden cost, and most of it goes unnoticed until it’s too late. That’s why, under the quality module learning, I’ve developed a demo version for learning of the Cost of Quality (CoQ) dashboard, fully integrated into the OEE system, linking quality performance directly to overall equipment effectiveness, KPI, TPM, Lean, and financial impact. Recently, I walked students through a full breakdown of CoQ, not just slides or notes, but real dashboards and case-based analysis. We explored 6 practical modules: 1. Quality in Real Industry 2. Pareto Analysis - 80/20 Principle 3. Fishbone Diagram - 6M 4. Control Chart for Process Stability 5. OEE Intercorrelation 6. 7 QC Tools 💡 Students learn from demo dashboard to understand how small issues, like minor defects, can lead to major cost impacts. This is how we prepare them for the real world: Not just with tools and theory, but with practical insight that connects quality to business value. ...

KPI Selection Practical Industry

Image
"If you can plot it and monitor it regularly, that’s already a KPI. It doesn’t have to be complicated, as long as it’s a number that helps you track or improve something, it counts." This was one of the key lessons I shared with diploma students during our recent session. I designed two demo dashboards, one focusing on OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and another covering Manufacturing KPIs including Defect Rate, First Pass Yield, Rework Rate, Planned vs Unplanned Maintenance Ratio, Safety Accident/Incidents, and Near Miss Frequency. These practical dashboards helped students understand that KPI selection shall align not only with job roles and procedures, but also with company policies and strategic business direction. When KPIs are chosen with clear intent and context, they become more than just numbers, they become part of continual improvement

Connecting Theory and Practice in Technical Education

Image
Recently completed a teaching session with diploma-level students on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) using an interactive learning module developed specifically for this topic. We covered: > 8 Total Productive Maintenance Pillars > 7 Wastes in Manufacturing > Connection to OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) > Role of Safety in maintenance activities > Practical examples to connect theory with real applications Always a rewarding experience to guide the next generation in understanding how these concepts apply in actual industry settings.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)

Image
Recently completed a teaching session with diploma-level students on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), where we introduced Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as a key performance metric. We covered the three main components: ✅ Availability –  includes downtime due to breakdowns, setup, and maintenance ⚙️ Performance – speed losses and minor stops 🎯 Quality – defects, rework, and scrap Students learned how even a “busy” machine can hide inefficiencies. OEE helps identify improvement opportunities without the need for additional equipment. Using real-world examples and visual dashboards, they gained practical insight into tracking and improving shop floor performance. hashtag # LeanManufacturing
